purpose
it will be useful to think about what's in it for:
the artists
the gallery / venue
us (people putting the whole thing together)
yes, it will be useful to think about that

talks
How about 6 artists over 6 weeks, but talks wise 3 speak at the opening (for 30 mins each or so) and after 3 weeks (half way through the exhibition) the other 3 speak.
That sounds better?

Artists (update)
Have been thinking a bit more about the exhibition (and the artists for this) and the book (and the artists for this):
I really like the idea of the contributing artists talking about their work, I thus like the idea of the exhibition consisting of a handful of artists, as mentioned.
I was thinking about you Lizzie, and how I wondered if (and hoped) you would like to be a part of the show and talks. Although I do appreciate you may not want to do this, and that that would be totally fine and cool and all that jazz too.
The book could feature a greater number of artists (who work with words), and have larger features / articles / interviews / pictures of those artists that took part in the show and talks.
I'm thinking that this could be lovely, and I'm also thinking this would really add to the workload.
Perhaps:
ESPO (Steve Powers) - how interesting would this be to talk about
You are beautiful - here
No days Off - here
Sighn - here
Andy Smith - here
Reed Seifer - here
Ian Stevenson (I like drawing) - here
Rob Ryan - here
Neckface
Eroise

venues
Phoenix
Spacex
I know there's not a lot here, but there is a lot to think about regarding the implications of where we have the show. The Spacex is obviously a gallery in a very 'gallery' like way (that's cleared that up) and the Phoenix is more of a community venue. I don't yet know enough about what the main aims of the project are to know what sort of venue will suit best, but I do know that the mix of people who go to the Phoenix is far more varied than the mix that goes to the Spacex. However I also know that the Spacex does a lot to try to engage the community, having visited cool (busy) workshop type things will Mabel in the past...

artists
Richard Dinnis
Sam Winston
Word To Mother
Bronco
Lizzie Ridout (see above, and below)
David Shrigley
This feels like a nice mix of types of artists...
Richard is obviously a genius of the highest order, say no more.
Sam works only with text - in a very professional and polished design based way, yet with a very human, real, hands on 'cut up' feel.
Word to Mother has a very handmade, earthy, natural feel to his work that I think adds an interesting juxtaposition to Sam's work in particular.
Bronco is a proper street artist in the sense of getting up there, hitting the streets hard. He uses a gloriously simple and matter of fact style - the words / message does the majority of the work. I think he'd bring a really nice different element to the project, and I'd bet he'd be very interesting to listen to.
David Shrigley needs little introduction, and it would be so wonderful to have him involved.
ADD - Lizzie Ridout (see artists (update) above)
There are a number of other artists who I'm sure we could think of at the drop of a hat who's work and ideas would fit gloriously with the idea behind the show. I wonder if for now we should concentrate purely on the people above, as to help us (me) focus etc. although it's interesting to briefly contemplate growing in numbers, especially in relation to the book, if not the show (particularly the talks aspect)...

designing album covers before we've even bought instruments
hey hey, it was great to speak to you both today - it would be really exciting to have a continuing dialogue with you both. At this (very) early stage it would be awesome to just think about it and contribute as a three piece, and once I feel we have something a little more concrete (or at least a little more thought through), then it would be great to get hold of Rich. I know he'd have wonderful contribution from the start, I'm just aware that I'd really love to have him involved as an artist in the project, that I want to ensure that the first time he hears about it it sounds thought through and interesting, and thus will be more likely to wish to be involved - does this make sense? Do I really need to worry about this yet, I only bloody thought of it about 4 days ago, I have the feeling of being in a band designing album covers before we've even bought instruments, let alone worked out how to play chords.
so...
Anyhow, surely this is enough to think about for now. Surely xxx
so...
- I reckon 4 to 6 artists (who work with words) exhibiting work in a group show.
- The show lasts 4 to 6 weeks, and every Saturday that the show is on one of the artists will present a bit of info about themselves and their work before taking questions.
- The show, evening talks and the artists work in a more general sense, will be documented on a website and in a book.
- Each artist could create a (small edition) print for the show.
- After spending a month or so at one venue, the show moves to another venue.
- the artists
- the venue
- funded / not funded and the pros and cons of both
- organised meticulously / falls together and the pros and cons of both
- how does one go about approaching the artists / venue / possible funding options etc.
- who does all this (as in how many people - us) and how (especially with jobs etc.)
Anyhow, surely this is enough to think about for now. Surely xxx
